Ceramic coating – what is it and is it worth the money?
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that cures into a hard, transparent layer on the paint and forms a chemical bond — not just an outer layer that washes off. The result is durable protection against UV, chemicals, and dirt for 2–5 years.
- Ceramic coating lasts 2–5 years compared to wax's 1–3 months
- The paint must be polished thoroughly BEFORE application — this is the most time-consuming step
- It is NOT scratch-proof and NOT maintenance-free — the car is still washed normally
- Price from 5 500 NOK including paint correction
What is ceramic coating?
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer applied to the car's painted surface that cures into a hard, transparent layer. Once cured, it forms a chemical bond with the paint — not just an outer layer that washes off.
The result is a surface that:
- Repels water and dirt — water beads off far more effectively than wax
- Protects against UV radiation — prevents the paint from fading and yellowing over time
- Resists chemicals — bird droppings, insects, and industrial contamination don't damage the paint as easily
- Adds depth and gloss — the paint looks deeper and more vibrant
Ceramic coating vs. regular wax
| Wax | Ceramic coating | |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | 1–3 months | 2–5 years |
| Water beading | Good | Excellent |
| UV protection | Moderate | High |
| Scratch resistance | None | Moderate |
| Price | Low | Higher |
Ceramic coating does not remove existing scratches and is not scratch-proof against deep scratches. The surface must be polished BEFORE application for a good result. The car still needs to be washed regularly — the coating makes washing easier, but doesn't eliminate the need.

The paint typically needs to be polished and thoroughly cleaned before the coating can be applied — this is the most time-consuming step and makes up most of the price. See what's included on our ceramic coating page.
Yes — if you plan to keep the car for several years or want to preserve its value when selling. Ceramic coating is more cost-effective than paying for wax and polishing every year, and the car is easier to wash throughout the entire period.
